Veri*Factu explained in English

Spain is introducing new rules for invoicing software. This guide explains what Veri*Factu is, who it affects, and what you need to do — in plain English.

The short version

From 2027, most businesses in Spain must use invoicing software that creates secure, tamper-proof invoice records. If you're currently using Excel, Word, or paper invoices, you'll need to switch. If you're already using BillBee, you're covered.

What is Veri*Factu?

Veri*Factu is part of Spain's Sistema de Información Fiscal (SIF) — a set of technical requirements for invoicing software designed to make invoice fraud harder.

The name "Veri*Factu" comes from "verifiable invoice." Every invoice created by compliant software must have a verifiable digital fingerprint — a hash — that links it to the previous invoice. If anyone tries to change or delete an invoice, the chain breaks and the tampering is detectable.

Who is affected?

Almost all businesses that issue invoices in Spain will be affected eventually. The main deadlines are:

• 1 January 2027 — Companies paying Corporation Tax (SL, SA, etc.)
• 1 July 2027 — Autónomos and most other taxpayers

Some small businesses and very low-volume invoicers may have different rules — confirm with your gestor.

What does compliant software do?

Under Veri*Factu, invoicing software must:

• Create a cryptographic hash chain linking every invoice
• Generate a QR code on every invoice
• Store records in a specific XML format
• Prevent deletion or modification of issued invoices (only corrections are allowed)
• Be able to submit records to AEAT electronically

Do I need to do anything in BillBee?

Excel, Word, and paper invoices will not meet the Veri*Factu requirements. The deadline isn't far away — and software providers will likely be busy in late 2026 as businesses rush to comply. The best time to switch is now.
