What is a rectification invoice in Spain?

A rectification invoice — or correction invoice — is used when an issued invoice needs to be changed properly. In Spain, you cannot simply edit an old invoice. You need to create a formal correction record.

Why you should not edit old issued invoices

Once an invoice has been issued, it is part of your official record chain. Editing it directly breaks that chain, creates discrepancies in your records, and can cause compliance problems — especially under Veri*Factu rules where invoice records are designed to be tamper-proof.

When a correction invoice is needed

• The price on the original invoice was wrong
• The client details were incorrect
• The IVA rate was wrong
• The service description was inaccurate
• The client returned the service and you need to reverse the charge
• You agreed a discount or credit after the invoice was issued

How a correction invoice works

A correction invoice references the original invoice number and shows either a replacement amount or the difference. The original invoice stays in your records — it is not deleted. The correction invoice creates the adjustment.

Example: You issued FAC-2027-012 for €600 but the agreed price was €550. You create a correction invoice referencing FAC-2027-012, showing −€50 or replacing the amount. Both invoices remain in your records.
